An assault leading to actual bodily harm carries a 5 year prison sentence.

Assault and battery has a 6 month custodial sentence and a £5000 fine at Magistrates Court.

Assaulting a constable or someone helping him/her has a maximum sentence of 6 months imprisonment and a £5000 fine.

Note : that an assault does not necessarily mean that there has been any physical contact. It can be purely a threatening gesture. Words or threatening language are not enough to mean that there has been an assault.
