It is illegal to dishonestly obtain goods, money or property with the intention of permanently depriving the rightful owner.

Magistrates can set a maximum sentence of 6 months in prison and a £5000 fine. 

Crown Courts can set a maximum of 10 years in prison and unlimited fines.

Obtaining a monetary or other advantage. Has the same penalty in the Magistrates but the Crown Courts powers extend to imposing a maximum term of 5 years in prison and unlimited fines.
