Registration
The Vehicle Excise and
Registration Act 1994 makes it illegal not to have a registration fixed on
a vehicle which is according to the legal requirements of size and
shape.
The plate should not be
obscured or allowed to become unreadable.
Magistrates can fine £1000.
The same Act makes an
offence of forging numbers or fraudulently using a registration
mark.
This can lead to a 6 month
prison sentence and a £5000 fine from Magistrates or a 2 year sentence
and unlimited fines at Crown Court level.
The Road Vehicles
(Registration and Licensing) Regulations 1971 order that changes of
address and ownership should be notified. Failure to do so can lead to £1000
fine at Magistrates Court. The same Act makes it illegal not to illuminate
the registration mark during hours of darkness.
