Computer and Internet Fraud

The modern day fraudster is quite adept at using new tools to his advantage.  Commentators have suggested that it is the threat of fraud that drives advances in computer science and internet technology. With this in mind it is difficult not to see why the computer security industry is the one that is quite often keeping up with the criminals by inventing new systems for the fraudster to beat. With the advent of the internet and the exponentially increasing trade that passes electronically between businesses, the amount of computer crime and internet fraud has risen year on year.

We have access to specialist personnel who have both police and military training when it comes to detecting this sort of crime. Our strategic partners are able to interrogate computer evidence in whatever form, from mobile phones to large scale servers, and present that in a clear and understandable way.

In a recent case, a computer system within an organisation was being manipulated in order to perpetrate a fraud.  Although the actual computer language that was being used was highly specialised and obscure, our experts were able to decipher it and present it in an understandable form. The fraud consisted of instructing the computer system to make items were not recorded.  Employees would then sell those items for cash without an entry ever being made.

On being instructed by our clients, we attended the scene, made copies of the hard drives on all the relevant computer systems and were able to explain in detail (with the assistance of our expert) to our client how the fraud was being perpetrated.  Although the crime was such that no individual could have been held accountable because user names and passwords were being regularly exchanged, we were able to give appropriate advice to our client and recommended an urgent change in working practices and policies. As soon as these were implemented this simple measure effectively stopped the fraud overnight, thereby saving a substantial amount of money for our client. Further we also recommended the implementation of a policy for the organisation which made disclosure of user name and password to non-authorised personnel, a disciplinary matter.
